La prima stagione di American Idol iniziò l'11 giugno 2002 (con il titolo completo American Idol: The Search for a Superstar) e finì il 4 settembre 2002. La vincitrice fu Kelly Clarkson. L'edizione fu presentata da Ryan Seacrest e Brian Dunkleman: quest'ultimo abbandonò la conduzione alla fine della stagione.

Le audizioni si tennero a New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas, Miami, Atlanta e Seattle nella primavera del 2002.
